Why is diversity in a team important?
At Marketing Eye, we have a very diverse team. Members of our team come from the United States, Australia, Dubai, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and New Zealand. While accents may vary, the work that our team does remains based on an industry best practice standard and a need to bring diversity into our marketing perspective.
As we keep building our team with diversity and minority groups at the forefront of our recruitment process, we are not alone. Many organisations are recognising the significance of diversity within their teams. Diversity brings together individuals with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, which can lead to enhanced creativity, innovation and productivity. From a team perspective, it also brings a sense of culture and enriches the lives of people within the team. Other aspects that add value when it comes to team diversity include:
Different Talents, Skills, and Experiences
When building a team, it is crucial to recognise that no two individuals are the same. Each team member brings a unique set of talents, skills and experiences to the table. By embracing diversity in your team, you can create an environment where the collective strengths of individuals complement and enhance each other's performance. This blend of diverse backgrounds, including age, race, personality, skills and working styles, can foster a rich and dynamic team culture. From a marketing agency perspective, having diverse cultures within the team ensure that there is a firmer understanding of buyer personas. This has been a competitive advantage for our marketing agency over the past 20 years.
Studies have consistently shown that diverse teams outperform homogeneous ones. A research report by McKinsey & Company revealed that companies with a diverse workforce are 35% more likely to have financial returns above the industry median. This underscores the importance of embracing diversity to drive success and achieve better business outcomes.
Creates Innovation
Innovation thrives in an environment where different perspectives are valued and encouraged. Diversity in a team can lead to the generation of fresh ideas and creative solutions. When individuals with diverse backgrounds collaborate, they bring their unique experiences, insights and approaches to problem-solving. This diversity of thought sparks innovation and enables teams to find unique solutions to complex challenges.
A study conducted by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) supports the notion that diversity drives innovation. The research found that companies with diverse management teams generate 19% higher revenue from innovation compared to those with less diverse teams. Furthermore, diverse teams were more likely to introduce disruptive products and services, keeping them ahead in the market.
Grows Your Talent Pool
By embracing diversity, organisations position themselves as inclusive and progressive, attracting a wider range of candidates to their job vacancies. A diverse workforce not only enhances the organisation's reputation but also expands the talent pool from which it can recruit. By tapping into diverse talent, organisations can access a broader range of skills, perspectives and experiences, which can contribute to better decision-making and problem-solving. For Marketing Eye, finding talent has been difficult over the past 3 years especially finding marketers that have enough experience aligned to their salary expectations. Diversity has allowed for the company to get back on track post COVID by hiring people that may be newer to Australia.
Research conducted by LinkedIn shows that 78% of job candidates consider diversity an important factor when evaluating potential employers. Therefore, organisations that prioritise diversity and create an inclusive workplace are more likely to attract top-tier talent. This not only strengthens the team but also enhances the organisation's ability to compete in a diverse and global marketplace.
Shifting the Organisational Culture
To truly embrace diversity, organisations must foster an inclusive culture that values and celebrates differences. It is not enough to merely hire diverse employees; leaders must create an environment where all team members feel comfortable expressing their ideas and perspectives.
Leaders play a pivotal role in shaping the culture of an organisation. They must champion diversity, lead by example and ensure that diversity and inclusion are integral parts of the organisational DNA. By promoting an inclusive culture, leaders can encourage collaboration, open dialogue and the sharing of diverse viewpoints. I’m aware that as a white female business leader, there have been many advantages but also, as a tech company owner, I have found that being a female raising capital is twice as hard with unconscious (and sometimes conscious) bias. Making sure that I pave the way for others in minority groups to have a seat at the table is a mandate that I take very seriously.
Diversity is not just a buzzword; it is a strategic imperative for organisations seeking to succeed in business. Embracing diversity in your team brings together individuals with different talents, skills and experiences, fostering creativity, innovation and productivity. By creating an inclusive culture, organisations can tap into a broader talent pool and position themselves as progressive industry leaders. It's time to shift the organisational mindset and embrace the power of diversity to drive success and achieve sustainable growth.
