When I started out in marketing, I worried that I wasn’t extraverted enough, wasn’t fashionable and preferred a good book over a cocktail party.

Since then, marketing has changed and the ‘nerdier’ marketers are fast becoming the rock stars due to results they derive for their clients, and the ‘fashionable’ lot are seen more as events specialists or publicists. Now, that’s a stereotype, of course, but the gist of it is that things have changed over the past three decades and what was once considered to be ‘cool’ is no longer the case.

It's that time of year again where business leaders are conducting performance reviews.

When you have a marketing agency, it is imperative that you understand the very different dynamics between marketers and other roles within a company. Fundamentally, marketers are very different and like most professions, tend to have triggers that keep their performance at a high, and others that send them in a downward spiral.

5 Hacks every marketer should know

Every marketer has tricks up their sleeve. If they didn't, they are not trying hard enough. Having been a marketing consultant for many years, I have had the pleasure of rolling up my sleeve and showing the world (well, mostly people in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney) how they too can use some of the tricks of the trade to accelerate their marketing reach.

What makes for a great marketer?

Travelling from Sydney to Melbourne each week in between taking the trek from Australia to the US on a regular basis, I get to spend a lot of time thinking. Mostly I think about business, which may be boring for most, but what the heck...it's who I am and I won't apologise.

89 days, 16 countries, 6 different languages and a lifetime experience. It's safe to say these past three months were nothing short of an absolute blast, but travelling was honestly more than that, it was an incredible lifetime opportunity filled with lessons and one of kind experiences one can only imagine.

You may have read that robots will not replace marketers - and I am going to tell you now, in this blog, that largely they will. Marketing as a profession will change in the next 12 month to 2 years so dramatically, that everyone will need to re-invent themselves and companies that are still selling the same old marketing skill set, will find that they no longer have a business.
I'm a marketer. It's been my choice of career for almost 25 years. I am the first to put up my hand and say that I know very little about anything other than marketing - and even with that, it's a daily challenge to keep up to the many changes in dynamics, technology, and human behaviours that affect our ability as marketers to do a job well.

Over a year, I speak with hundreds of marketers and potentially, more than a thousand entrepreneurs. More recently, interviewing people for roles with our fast-growth company has meant that I have been having conversations with quite a few marketers, many of whom have tried their hand at being entrepreneurs. In fact, more than 30 percent of the marketers in the latest bunch have started a company, and during the job interviewing phase, have said that the company was successful, but either exists no more or is put to the wayside.
