My Experience as an Intern at Marketing Eye Melbourne
As I come to the end of my internship with Marketing Eye at their Melbourne office, I’ve finally been able to take the time and reflect on the skills that I have obtained and the knowledge I have gathered along the way. As a university student in their penultimate year, I was faced with the decision of what career I wanted to do once I graduated.
Marketing has always been a passion and interest of mine and I was so excited when I saw an internship opportunity available at Marketing Eye. The application process was very straightforward and I was invited to join the team for a few months after a phone interview with one of the marketing specialists. I will never be happier with my decision to intern at Marketing Eye as the experience I’ve obtained will enable me to approach future jobs with not only more confidence but more ability as well.
If you are currently a university student like me and think that you’re getting enough knowledge and skills to prepare you for the real world then I hate to say it but you’re most likely missing out. Whilst the content that they teach you in class at university is irreplaceable and will provide a solid foundation to theoretical concepts and key fundamentals of marketing, what you do in the classroom is essentially very different from what you will find yourself doing in an actual career. At Marketing Eye, I was given the chance to use the theory, knowledge and skills that I had been taught throughout my university degree and apply them to real-life tasks with real companies and real-time information.
Although COVID-19 rendered my internship experience homebound, I was still lucky enough to meet the close-knit team at the start of my internship even though it was a brief introduction. Marketing Eye’s team consisted of passionate and hard-working individuals who never failed to take the time to ensure I had enough support throughout my entire internship. I was always encouraged to ask questions, be curious and make mistakes.
At the beginning of my internship, I was always trying to get work done as fast as I could, not make mistakes or ask too many questions but somewhere along the way, I realised that we were encouraged to try new things and ask questions that did not mean you were incompetent it just meant you were learning as was everyone else. No one ever became amazing at their job from the get-go, everyone had to start from a position of constant learning and making mistakes and I am grateful that the team at Marketing Eye taught me just that.
One of the main reasons I loved my time at Marketing Eye is that I always felt like an equal and my ideas and opinions were really taken as high priority. I was also given a lot more autonomy than I expected over decisions such as social media captions and blog content.
If you’re currently on the fence about whether or not you should start an internship my advice to you would be to go for it. You absolutely will not regret it. Prior to my internship, I was confused and a bit lost as to what exactly I wanted to do as a career as there were so many options out there. I knew that marketing was one of my top choices but did not have a lot of knowledge on what a marketing career actually was like. Thanks to my internship I’ve been able to have real, hands-on experience in the working world and have a much clearer idea of what a marketing career is like.
