As one door closes, another opens - that's the life of an entrepreneur
I sat on the beach, looking out at the stars and soaking up a warm summers night in Palm Beach. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. I had had a run of bad luck. Fortunately, not in business. It was more little things like parking fines and delayed flights. Things that don't matter too much but all together seem like a big deal. I also had the anniversary of my father's passing, which is never a great time for anyone.
But sitting on that beach, I had a moment of clarity. And then everything changed.
Some good advice I received was that every minute you spend doing something that you don't want to do, you are not able to do something that you do want to do. Or, for every minute you spend with someone that is not fulfilling your needs, you are missing the opportunity of being with someone who will.
It was at that moment that I had clarity. Every moment counts.
So, as I reluctantly closed one door, I took one step and opened another. And wow! I mean wow! Behind that door everything instantly became easy. The day became brighter. I felt like the minute I walked in the door, I was the most special person in the room. It is everything that I hoped for and more.
When a door closes in business, we sometimes get caught up in how the door actually closed and what was left behind it. If you take a few steps and maybe it means that it is more steps than you would have liked to have taken - you may find that you are pleasantly surprised. Maybe behind that second door are things that will change your life. That will make your business more successful. That will bring you more money and more opportunity.
Never be afraid to close a door that needs closing and open that next door when it's right in front of you with gusto. Take risks and live life. Afterall, isn't that part of what life is all about?

10 Feb 2012I completely agree! If we dwell on the past too much and are afraid of what the future holds (even though it may be uncertain) then where will we go in life? This can be applied at both work and personal life situations.

09 Feb 2012Your words are so insightful and I believe these ideas can be translated into so many different contexts of our lives.
ReplyWhen several small mundane problems become one large issue in our lives, we can become blinded by these negative impacts and forget what is truly important in life. Whilst at the time these problems feel like the worst situation imaginable, I find it insightful to step back and realize that there are much worse things that could be affecting us.
By closing a door behind us we are accepting these problems but moving on with the confidence and determination that these problems will not effect our lives which we have so much to be thankful for.
By closing these doors, we allow ourselves to change.
The best thing you can do is allow change to happen. How can one experience the vast opportunities in the outside world if we are stuck behind doors which restrict us from being who we want to be?
This mantra is application to family, work, friends or relationships. The ability to let go of past hang ups allows the future to open its possibilities.
As I have been applying for marketing jobs and internships for the past several months, it can be hard to let go of the rejection time after time. But, like Melissah, I closed the door of negative thoughts and opened a new opportunistic door.
My new outlook has allowed me to have the confidence that if I don't get a job, there will always be another opportunity waiting for me.

07 Feb 2012Wouhao! I've been reading the articles since many weeks now and I have to say that the way of writing is very pleasant and so outstanding!
ReplyThe comparison of the business with your/our personal lifes gives us the opportunity to reocognize ourself like the actor of the "story" and to have a completely different approach of the business topic.
This feminin touch and approach of business is something I have never seen and it gaves to the business a character lighter, softer and it makes it closer to all of us.
Excellent blog!

07 Feb 2012What an amazing blog!!!!!! So insightful!!
ReplyI haven't been in many instances where I have need to 'close doors behind me' and open new ones. Though when it comes to choosing my friends and acquaintances wisely 'closing one door to open another' has been so very relevant.
I have left behind 'friends who didn't have much to offer me as a friend, those who didn't share the same qualities as me' . I open the door to new friends, or those existing friends that do have more to offer me than just a simple hi and bye here and there. They are the ones who are there for life and have a lot of offer (at least it appears that way for now).
Fantastic blog, couldn't agree any more on what you have to say here Mellissah!!!!
