I see the number 8 - what do you see?
Ever wondered why you see the same number by coincidence over and over again?
While researches say that it is merely a case that our minds just recognises a number and attunes itself to it, could it really be more than coincidence? My number is 8. I park always in a carspot that has an 8 in the digits, I feel lucky when it is a date with an 8 in it, any ticket I receive always has an 8 and the address of many places that I go to has an 8 in it.
It is the number of perfection, the infinity.
Eight is the symbol of the cosmic christ and the final point of manifestation. In China, the eight expresses the totality of the universe and in Egypt, the eight is the balance and cosmic order. It is the symbol of new life and may signify that the person who attunes themself to this number is practical, stubborn, a good judge of character, self-confident, very dependable and ambitious.
Pythagoreans see it as the symbol of love and friendship and the Japanese as multiplicity and prosperity. It represents teh start of new order, regeneration and resurrection.
According to Clement of Alexandria, the Christ places the sign of 8 on the one he made to be born again.
The Cabalists affirm that there were in the Temple of Jerusalem eight gates from which the eighth gate would open only for the Messiah. Maybe this is a sign for me as my name is Mellissah. If you just add two L's.
I am not sure if all of this is true, but it certainly has had some effect on my life. Today is the 18th day of the month. I woke up early, full of beans and good spirit for no particular reason at all. Every positive vibe that I could gather is in my spirit and I am ready to tackle the world with kindness, a big smile and a thoughful, concise attitude.
They say it is a mind game, and once you notice a number, you stick with it, but if it is and it bring along with it a positive spirit, then that can only be great. Right?
BTW. I was born on the 28th day of the 8th month.

25 May 2012For me, it's kind of the opposite. I tend to avoid seeing the unlucky number 13 and if im reading a blog, the ones that are on page 13, i tend to skip. My family is kind of the same and with an asian background, the number 4 is percieved as unlucky. When my dad bought his new car, the license plate had a 4 in it and he paid a few hundred more just to change that one digit to an 8.

21 Apr 2012Thats very interesting, yesturday I was just reading about confirmation biases and I think that applies to this situation where you subconsciously seek out certain information. Similar to when you learn a new word and the next day you start hearing it on the news or seeing in the paper, it's not that you haven't seen it before, just that it didn't register with you consciously.

20 Apr 2012I don't really pay attention to these details, but I've always considered 10 my favourite and lucky number just because it's my birthdate! And now that you've mentioned it, I have stumpled upon the number in a couple of rare ocassions.
ReplyLucky you having the number 8 as a vital part of your life. We consider the number very lucky especially for the Chinese and on one ocassion, my uncle who has the plate number NG 8888 on his car was offered tens of thousands by a chinese man to attain the prized possesion :)

19 Apr 2012Interesting read Mellissah! Looks like you are drawn to the number 8. I personally do not see any symbolic meaning in numbers, perhaps it's because I don't take much notice. After reading, "It is the number of perfection, the infinity.", it actually reminds me of a tv show on Channel 7 called Revenge. The main character has a double infinity tattooed on the inside of her wrist and makes many references to the concept.

18 Apr 2012That's really interesting. Number's don't have a huge significance to me. But i have a few friend who find that numbers are signifiant to them. I think it's amazing that many different cultures follow the meaning of numbers. I wonder if it really does express meaning.... I guess its all based on our interpretations.
