To hire or not

March 11th, 2010

Travelling the world talking to business people can sometimes make everything seem so much more clearer.

I often find myself talking to people who are inspiring, informative and entrepreneurial, so I learn so much from what they say and do.

I am interested in the Political climate, government legislation and community factors that influence business decisions.

One of the biggest topics of conversation this week with the various entrepreneurs that I have met with is whether or not they hire someone or use a consultancy for various services like HR, accounting, administration and marketing.

In France, one of the biggest issues facing businesses is the high cost of wages and associated costs to have an employee.

In Australia, whilst as business owners we continually complain about superannuation, payroll tax, workers compensation, holidays and the number of public holidays our employee receive, we are nothing on the French system.

Many French business owners say that when they take on a new employee, they allocate double their salary in costs.

If that was the case in most of my clients small businesses, they would be broke!

It really is ridiculous and makes it very difficult for small businesses to hire new staff and grow their businesses.

This is exactly why Marketing Eye is right now looking at the French market. It makes sense. Marketing Eye is designed to help small to medium sized businesses that want to grow. A typical client does not have a senior marketing manager but needs marketing to help with their growth plans. It’s a great interim between having no marketing resource and hiring someone full time.

To hire, or not, is a question every business owner asks themselves time and time again. It’s like the chicken and the egg.

Everywhere in the world, there is a restaurant

March 11th, 2010

No matter where you travel in the world, there is always a restaurant that someone recommends.

In Paris, it appears that Australian’s love to got L’Avenue in the 8th District. It is a very chic Parisan restaurant owned by the Coste Group. On Sunday, I was sitting outside, enjoying some beautiful French wine and I met one of the owners. His restaurants are world famous and they are on the ‘must visit’ list for most tourists.

Last night, after attending a networking group where this young woman puts together people from countries around the world to meet and find out more about each other, I realised that this restaurant isn’t just a tourist destination, but the locals love it too.

Its a typical french restaurant and is full of the rich and fabulous from around the world and Paris. Furs (not so fake!!!) are adorned on each woman who walks in and the men are handsome with stylish suits.

I am sure the way you are dressed depends on where they seat you.

The world is our oyster

March 10th, 2010

Having a go is very Australian and since my short stay in Paris, I have realised just how much Australian’s really are ‘having a go’.

I am a very proud Australian but like many of us, I have one parent born in Australia and another overseas in Europe.

I travel alot for both business and pleasure and am always amazed at the success abroad that Australians pave for themselves.

Here in Paris, there are Aussie’s everywhere. Elle McPherson and Kylie Minogue have spent their fair share of time here and are both well accomplished business women.

Howard Storage, Dominos and many more Australian chains have expanded their operations here with great success.

As I meet with business people, potential clients and Austrade, I am amazed and incredibly proud of Australia’s mark on this very glamorous city.

From Paris With Love

March 8th, 2010

I am sitting at a cafe in one of the most beautiful, romantic cities in the world wondering whether or not I should be working or out exploring. In the end, I decided that its best to do both.

In marketing and in business, it’s hard to get a real perspective if all you do is work and live in the same, little old world that you always have.

Exploring the world, new markets, cultures and the way people market themselves all over the globe has made me a better marketer and definately someone who has alot more to offer my clients and my team of marketers.

I don’t walk past a billboard in the street or in the subway without thinking of whether or not the style of advertising relates to my clients or not. Is it clever? Is it good value for money? Is there something that I can take away from the way they have done that billboard? These are all questions I ask myself.

I take note of customer service, design of retail stores, window displays, stories in newspapers and magazines and pretty much anything that relates to an interaction with a customer.

I meet with company’s on behalf of my clients to find out how company’s just like theirs are servicing clients and how potentially, my client can do it better.

Every time I travel to Paris, I am reminded of how different things are done all over the world and how much more we can learn from other cultures.

The French are great at so many things and fashion and champagne is just the start. Here I sit with designers who have a flare for creating style and with business people who know no boundaries.

I meet with Australians who are here to explore Paris and broaden their cultural experiences.

In the next week, whilst I meet with a number of business people, I will share with you my experiences, the people I meet and the interactions I have.

BINGLE… I DON’T FEEL SO SORRY FOR YOU ANYMORE

March 5th, 2010

I have unavoidably heard information relating to Lara Bingle’s nude photo and the update according to various media includes her selling her story for up to $200,000 and that quite possibly given that this was a 4 year old photograph, that she actually leaked it herself with her new management.

If either item is true, I apologise for writing an article that supports Lara Bingle, because if she was truly ashamed or embarrassed by the photograph she would not be promoting it in a major editorial for money. She would handle situation with some dignity and grace without selling her sole and her nudity as a way in which to get money. If she was truly hurt by what happened 4 years ago and ashamed, then she would not want to milk it for all it’s worth. I am all for her getting compensation, but that is from the person who did this to her, not from selling her story to the highest bidder.

Secondly, if her management leaked this after 4 years, then I too have been fooled. This is not clever marketing or branding, but in fact, a complete disgrace. You are not only tarnishing the Lara Bingle brand but also tarnishing the brand of a footballer who by all accounts seems to have changed in the past 6 months.
