Kangaroos are not jumping down the street in the heart of Sydney - contrary to popular opinion
Everywhere I go, people say “are you crazy… you left the sunshine, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, kangaroos, koalas and the great barrier reef for this.
I always pause, almost second-guessing what I am doing. But every single time, I come to the same conclusion.
I have a dream and that dream is to build a global small business firm that helps businesses realize their full potential.
I am tired of my small business mates always being left to the wayside and using some freelancer that their Cousins Aunt met while they were in school.
Instead, we provide small businesses with an alterative to make it big and do it now.
At first, it took time to get the model right. Like many small businesses in the professional services industry, we found that being unique wasn’t as easy as we would have liked and over that time, we learnt a lot about small businesses.
We learnt 3 things:
1. Every small business owner has a dream
2. Our role is to help them realize that dream
3. And no-one wants surprises – and I mean no-one.
So, our job was to understand the entrepreneurs behind our clients businesses and get a grasp of what their dreams were.
Only when we understood this, were we able to use our skills and capabilities to help them realize those dreams.
You may think “no surprises” is an unusual addition, but we found that one of the biggest issues that small businesses faced is cash flow. There were too many variables in their businesses and when you are looking at growing – and I meaning growing, cash is king.
So, unlike our competitors, because we have a no outsourcing model, we were able to identify that our clients, small businesses like your and mine, just wanted to know that someone was dedicated to their marketing; committed to getting their brand out there and that they were being charged only one fee. That means everything included from developing their website and keeping it updated, to search engine optimization, branding, public relations, sales presentations, leader generation campaigns, promotions – you name it, if it fits under the marketing banner, they want it included. And as it turns out, so do we.
This was the turning point in our company and helped us deliver a “marketing eye” to literally hundreds of small businesses in Australia.
We now have turned on the high volume button and have launched in the US. It’s been an exhilarating ride, one that comes with ups and downs. The ups have been huge, like reaching the top 100 marketers to follow on twitter, hitting number one in all keywords pertinent to our business in our key markets in the US and being asked from major editorials for interviews.
The downs are not what you think. Getting clients proved easy. Keeping them equally as easy. But it’s the loneliness of being an entrepreneur in a foreign country, finding somewhere to live and being “new”.
While their have been some advantages having an Australian accent in a city were few Australians reside, it’s frustrating being asked to repeat myself over and over again, although this is becoming less and less as time goes on.
Our clients have been our biggest brand champions. They have found our approach to marketing refreshing and the creative we produce for websites, brochures, lead generation campaigns and brands – has been incredibly well received. In fact, for all of our clients, it has been the most exciting part of working with Marketing Eye and keeps them showing off our work to potential clients day-in, day-out.
Being a competitive marketing firm in Atlanta has meant that as a company we have to continue to build relationships and build our clients brands in a way that resonates with the market and excites them to keep on talking.
After all, it’s the conversations that they have, that keeps our brand alive.

08 Mar 2013Those that question why you are expanding your business are sheltered and obviously can't see the bigger picture. You have a vision a good vision at that. Those that can't see it and question you on it are not risk takers. What you are doing for you business is very admirable and courages. Not only have you taken a massive risk (which business is all about) but you are succeeding at it! There are always going to be ups and downs but thats part of life. You use those good and bad experiences so next time you wont make that mistake. Everything is a learning curve. Marketing Eye has a great model so sharing it with the world was definitely the right step! If your not moving forward your business will be left behind.

05 Mar 2013Reflecting on the article there are more than a few comments that jump to mind. First of all, if the Marketing Eye is so successful there has got to be a reason. In my opinion the in-house marketing model strongly supports this view, for clients are pleased and satisfied to see that only one contact being responsible of the whole marketing strategy is valuable. Moreover there is nothing better and stronger than word-of-mouth and contented customers will pass on your remarkable work for a long time. Working hand in hand with small business owners to help them fulfill their dreams and sustain their growth is exciting and is what has driven the Marketing Eye.
ReplyAs for the accent, I would rather have an Australian one than an American one. I had a British friend working at Marshall White in Melbourne and his accent turned out to be an advantage since clients liked it. Turn a weakness into a strength!

05 Mar 2013One fee charged for all of the marketing needs a business may require is a brilliant idea. It's just the reassurance that all their marketing work is done under one roof, keeping everything synchronised and having just one contact point for feedback and updates. This definitely generates positive and affirmative word-of-mouth referrals and in return, free 'marketing' for Marketing Eye.
ReplyThat being said, following your dream and starting a business is challenging enough, let alone expansion into a foreign market where expectations might be vastly different. It is inspiring to say the least.
