What It’s Like to Work at Marketing Eye in Melbourne
We are currently looking for a Marketing Specialist with 2–3 years' experience to join our South Yarra team. The salary range is $70,000 to $90,000 depending on experience and the role will manage up to 10 client accounts across industries including technology, contact centre, agriculture, associations and automotive aftersales.
For the right person, it is an opportunity to become a much more rounded marketer.
You work with clients, not around them
This is a client-facing role.
You will speak directly with clients, attend meetings, discuss priorities, present ideas and help keep their marketing moving. From time to time, you will also attend networking functions, industry events and client events.
We want our marketers to understand the businesses they work with, not simply the marketing tasks assigned to them.
That means getting to know what the client is trying to achieve commercially, who their customers are, where growth needs to come from and what marketing activity is most likely to make a difference.
Some clients need lead generation. Others need stronger positioning, better content, more disciplined campaign activity, SEO, social media, digital advertising, email marketing or a combination of these.
Your job is to help pull that together.
You are surrounded by people who can actually do the work
One of the advantages of working at Marketing Eye is that we have a full-service team in-house.
You are not expected to become a graphic designer, web developer, SEO specialist, digital advertising expert and strategist all at once.
You work with people who specialise in these areas.
Our team includes marketers, designers, web developers, SEO and digital specialists, content capabilities and a technology team that continues to build the systems we use every day.
We also have interns gaining real-world marketing experience, working alongside the broader team and learning how marketing works in practice. They are exposed to client work, marketing processes, content, research and campaign execution, giving them the opportunity to build experience in a professional environment rather than simply observing from the sidelines.
For someone joining us with two or three years' experience, this creates an interesting environment because you are working with people at different stages of their careers while also having access to specialists who can help execute the work properly.
We have our own technology team
Marketing Eye has spent years developing technology around the way marketing teams work.
A big part of that is Robotic Marketer, an AI marketing operations platform that helps with strategy, marketing planning, campaign development, calendars, workflows, content, reporting and performance intelligence.
The purpose of the technology is very simple.
It should make the marketer's job easier.
There are countless tasks in marketing that are repetitive and manual. Building reports, pulling information together, creating plans, updating calendars, tracking activity and working out what needs to happen next can consume a huge amount of time.
We have built technology to reduce that.
Our technology team works closely with the marketing business, so the systems are developed around real client needs and real marketing workflows.
That makes a meaningful difference when you are managing multiple accounts.
Strategy first
We have always believed that marketing works better when there is a strategy behind it.
We don't start with "we need three social media posts this week" or "we should run Google Ads because everyone else is".
We start with the business.
What are they trying to achieve?
Where does revenue come from?
Who are they trying to attract?
What is standing in the way?
How are competitors positioning themselves?
What is the opportunity?
From there, we build the marketing activity around the strategy.
Robotic Marketer helps make that process faster and more structured, but the marketer still plays an important role in interpreting the strategy, understanding the client and making good decisions.
The systems make a difference
One thing we have learned over many years of employing marketers is that people perform better when the environment around them is properly structured.
A new graduate can perform extremely well in parts of the same role because we have built strong processes around how clients are managed, how strategies are developed, how campaigns are planned and how work is delivered.
That does not diminish the value of experience. It means experience becomes more valuable because you can spend less time trying to work out how to manage the work and more time improving the work itself.
For someone with two or three years behind them, that structure can accelerate how quickly they develop.
You manage up to 10 clients
Your portfolio will generally include up to 10 clients.
That gives you enough variety to build experience across different industries without creating a workload where every day becomes reactive.
You might be reviewing campaign performance for a technology company in the morning, working on an association campaign before lunch and discussing lead generation with an automotive client in the afternoon.
You will learn quickly because no two businesses are exactly the same.
At the same time, you will have a clear strategy, processes and technology behind each account, along with access to the specialist team when work needs to move into design, web, SEO or digital execution.
We believe in doing good work during working hours
Marketing Eye operates around a 38-hour week.
We are not interested in building a culture where working late every night is treated as a sign of commitment.
There will always be the occasional event, deadline or client requirement that falls outside normal hours, but overtime is not meant to be the norm.
We want people to work hard while they are here and then go home.
When you walk out the door, we want you to forget about work and live your life.
See your friends. Go to dinner. Exercise. Travel. Spend time with family. Take the dog for a walk. Do whatever makes life enjoyable outside the office.
Good marketers need a life beyond marketing.
We close over Christmas
Every year, we close the office for around two weeks over Christmas.
It gives everyone the opportunity to properly switch off and take a break rather than spending the holiday period half-working and half-checking emails.
That matters to us.
And then there are Fridays
Most Fridays, we have lunch together.
Sometimes the boss cooks. Sometimes we get pizza.
It is not complicated and it is not forced.
It is simply part of working in a team where people spend a lot of time together and enjoy having the occasional lunch without talking about deadlines.
Who this role will suit
This role is probably right for you if you like variety and want to become a stronger all-round marketer.
You should be comfortable talking to clients, writing, organising projects, thinking through campaigns and working with different people across the business.
You do not need to be an expert in every area of marketing.
You do need to be curious, reliable, organised and willing to learn.
You should also enjoy working in an environment where technology is part of the job, because we use it heavily and continue to build more of it.
The people who tend to do well here are the ones who take responsibility for their work, communicate well and genuinely want to understand what makes a client's business work.
A good next step for a marketer with 2–3 years' experience
At this stage of your career, exposure is important.
The more clients you work with, the more industries you understand and the more conversations you have with business owners and senior executives, the faster you develop commercial judgement.
At Marketing Eye, you will work with clients directly, supported by an in-house marketing team, specialist delivery teams, interns building their experience and a technology team developing the tools we use every day.
You will have systems behind you, a strategy to work from and technology designed to remove a lot of the manual work that makes marketing unnecessarily cumbersome.
And you will still be expected to bring something of your own.
Ideas.
Curiosity.
Good judgement.
Energy.
And the ability to build relationships with clients.
The role is based in South Yarra, Melbourne, is full-time at 38 hours per week and offers $70,000 to $90,000 depending on experience.
If you want a marketing role where you can work with interesting clients, learn from a full-service team and still have a life outside the office, this could be a very good next move.
