Why is diversity in a team important?

Diversity means different. But why is it so important in a team?

Though we may share similarities with individuals, at the end of the day, everyone is their own person and can bring different things to the table. It is for this reason that diversity is so important among a team.

Hiring people with different personalities and at varying stages of their career, can help businesses foster creativity and offer a range of perspectives and ideas. A number of studies suggest that workplace diversity contributes to creativity, productivity and innovation. So why is diversity just so important?

Different Talents, Skills and Experiences:

Not one employee is the same. Team members come from diverse backgrounds and offer a selection of different talents, skills, and experiences that can be of benefit to an organisation and their work performance. Creating an eclectic team by embracing diversity among a team can be achieved by blending an array of areas such as; age, race, personality, skills, and working styles. Inheriting diversity, however, is only half the equation. It’s important to note that leaders need to establish a culture in which all employees feel free to contribute their ideas.

Creates Innovation:

Diversity within a team is said to create an environment where “outside of the box” ideas are heard! Diversity in a team can play on an individual’s strengths and drive innovation when collaborating with others. Diversity can unlock innovation and drive market growth. In fact, companies that embrace innovation are 45% more likely to have an increase in market share within that current year and are 70% more likely to report that the firm captured a new market.

Grows your Talent Pool:

Embracing diversity makes the company look like a progressive organisation. In doing so it will, in turn, attract a wider range of candidates to their vacancies. Tapping into diversity by thinking differently, provides an opportunity for organisations to increase the number of qualified candidates and to further diversify their team.

The big picture and the heart of the concept are that organisations must create a culture that is at the forefront of each and everyone minds though to both consciously and subconsciously attended to. In order to achieve such widespread workplace diversity, the mindset of an individual organisation's culture must shift! Overall, leaders need to understand the benefits that diversity can bring to an organisation and shift their culture.

Diversity is such a great way to collaborate and bring together a variety of ideas. Diverse thinking also helps with learning, where everyone can develop their skills and learn from one another. Great blog!

Diversity is a fundamental trait for every successful team or organisation. Not only does it grow your talent pool and creativity but it can improve the cultural insights of your business as well as employee engagement. In today's business environment we see so many diverse organisations and it is those who are not diverse that fall behind!
